7/15/2016 – Trapeze
You’ve seen it done many times at the circus but now it’s your turn–your first trapeze flight.
When: July 15, 2016
Where: Belmont Harbor, Chicago, IL
What: Trapeze School at Belmont Harbor
Why: You’ve seen it done many times at the circus but now it’s your turn–your first trapeze flight. You’re standing on the platform nearly 30 feet above the ground. Though you have the safety lines securely fastened to your belt, the instructor holding you is a grateful comfort as you hold the trapeze bar with a single hand. Leaning out over the edge of the platform, you’re either eager to capitalize on the adrenaline rush searing through your veins or perhaps you’re wondering what the hell you’re doing up on that 30ft patform. In either case, the instructors will treat you with patience and respect. They’ll leave the decision to jump completely up to you, though we give strong encouragement at the crucial moments. There may be one moment of fear just as you commit your body to the jump off the platform. Once you’re off the platform it’s all rainbows and lollipops from there. You’ll swing back and forth a few times, perhaps swinging your legs a bit, but mostly enjoying the pleasure of flight. It is a feeling like no other! One that you will expand upon in future jumps throughout the day. Now it is time to come down in the net. You will lift your legs and release the bar. You will then fall, usually awkwardly, into the net about 20ft below. That’s it. Your first of many trapeze flights. You are probably a bit shaky, definitely amazed and sure to be enjoying the encouragement of those around you. But wait, there’s more. You still have the opportunity to learn a knee hang, the flipping dismount and for those brave enough to try it…releasing upside down from the trapeze bar to be caught by one of the instructors on the other swing! All this, before the day is done!

TSNY Chicago continues to grow its community under the leadership of General Manager Steve Hammes, who discovered that teaching flying trapeze is just as much fun as performing juggling in the circus. TSNY Chicago hosts a number of summer camps for kids in collaboration with the Chicago Park District. Bonnie Miller manages the retail office in Chicago and is also our National Front Office Operations Manager.
